Flat Stanley Visits Venice California

Here I am arriving at the Post Office in Venice California. Venice is warm and sunny 12 months a year. It never snows in Venice. Venice is located on the Pacific Ocean near Los Angeles California.

Venice was founded 100 years ago. It is a town built to look like the city Venice in Italy. There are canals filled with water. I saw small boats floating on the water. I walked on a white wooden bridge to cross the canals so I wouldn't get wet.

Venice is often called 'Venice Beach' because it has a famous beach that many tourists like to visit. I liked my visit to the beach. It is a wide sandy beach. When I stood on the beach, I could see the Santa Monica mountain range in the distance.

I saw surfers and sailboats in the ocean.

I saw a blue lifeguard station. The lifeguard sits in the station. He looks through big binoculars to watch swimmers in the water. The lifeguards have yellow trucks they drive on the sandy beach. They patrol the beach to make sure all swimmers are safe. Walking in the sand made me tired, so I sat on a lifeguard station and took a little break.

A part of Venice Beach is named Muscle Beach. There is an outdoor weight-lifting gym in Muscle Beach. Men and women come to the gym and lift very heavy weights. They are trying to build big muscles. I saw a man lift a barbell that weighed 450 pounds! I weigh less than one pound, so that is a lot of weight.

I saw boys skateboarding on cement ramps near the beach. I was sunbathing in the sand and a boy did a skateboard trick on a ramp right above where I was sitting.

Next I saw the Venice Beach graffiti walls. These are tall cement walls. Artists spray paint on them. The artists use bright colors to paint the walls. The painting is called 'Graffiti Art'. Don't worry, they will not get yelled at for painting here. These are special walls where it is OK to paint on them. Artists are encouraged to be creative and paint whatever they like on the graffiti walls. Every day a new group of artists come and paint the walls. Every day new artworks appear on the graffiti walls.

I saw a group of people who came to the beach to play their drums.

I enjoyed walking the Venice Boardwalk. This is street along the beach where cars do not drive. Thousands of people walk up and down the boardwalk every day. There are many stores on the boardwalk. They sell t-shirts, beach toys, and souvenirs. I got a Venice Beach sticker at a store on the boardwalk.

Flat Stanley leaves Venice to travel to Round Lake Illinois.
